My Methods

In my therapy practice, I've learned a lot of trauma-informed methods that are very useful in helping people get unstuck. The main tools that I continue to use in my coaching practice are Somatic Experiencing and Expressive Arts Therapy. I also might add in some EMDR therapy, if my intuition tells me it could be helpful.

Somatic Experiencing
SE is a naturalistic form of healing that will help you learn how to settle and release physiological activation from your body.  Very often this process helps people to reduce stress and return to a sense of regulation and mastery in their lives. SE will support you in learning how to attend to uncomfortable sensations in your body and gently unwind them through your conscious attention. SE is particularly useful in managing stress because so many of the symptoms of stress are physiological. When we feel we are in danger, we naturally go into fight, flight, fawn, and/or freeze modes in order to protect ourselves. If we cannot return to a sense of safety, our bodies can stay stuck in this protective mode, which profoundly influences how we interact with the world. By listening to and working with what is happening in the body, we can begin to release stuck energy, resulting in a new freedom to move forward in our lives.

Expressive Arts Therapy
The expressive arts combine a variety of techniques and media, including music, movement, writing, and visual arts, in order to facilitate personal growth and transformation. No experience or expertise with art, writing, music, or dance is required; the focus in expressive arts therapy is on the process, not the product. Art, music, and movement often allow us to express things which cannot be expressed with spoken language.

EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic tool that is highly effective at engaging the brain's natural healing mechanisms. Stressful experiences often get stuck in particular ways in the brain and aren't completely processed. This can cause us to feel as though we can't move past those difficult events. EMDR allows the brain to complete the natural processing that it is designed to do. We can learn and gain insight from painful experiences while no longer being stuck in the feelings and memories.
